Developing Ahavat Hashem and Yirat Hashem

At Ben Porat Yosef, we seek to nurture the spiritual core within each student. By teaching Torah in a manner that enhances students’ sensitivity to the spiritual depth of its language, its characters, its themes, and its values, we illuminate a path of connection with, and love of, Hashem. In addition, through role modeling, infusing tefillah with meaning and beauty, encouraging expressions of wonder and gratitude, and seizing on teachable moments during daily instruction, we imbue ordinary moments with extraordinary meaning.

Inspiring, Challenging, and Engaging Each Learner

Recognizing that learners differ from one another in their interests, learning styles, and readiness for learning, our teachers design academically rigorous learning experiences that offer their students multiple paths toward developing the skills, dispositions, and understandings that will enable them to excel in their future learning, in their careers, and in life. To achieve these goals, we set clear benchmarks for success and consistent expectations, provide skill-based and data-driven instruction, and design lessons that engage students’ minds, hearts, and hands. We support students by fostering a growth mindset, teaching them to embrace challenges and venture outside of their comfort zones. Our approach utilizes hands-on discovery learning, poses thoughtful questions at every opportunity, and empowers students to ask their own probing questions. At the same time, we hold our students accountable for their academic responsibilities, set high standards, and expect their best work.

Celebrating our Sephardic and Ashkenazic identity and love of Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and Medinat Yisrael

A defining feature of the culture of BPY is the inclusion and authentic transmission of both our rich Sephardic and Ashkenazic heritages with emotion, energy, and excitement. The full range of diverse practices and traditions is included in our program of learning and observance in tefillot, birkat hamazon, holiday observances, and traditions from students’ and teachers’ countries of origin. This exposure to diversity fosters unity and identification with klal Yisrael.

Empowering and connecting students through Hebrew language fluency

We bestow upon our students the priceless gift of advanced Hebrew language proficiency, opening avenues of access to sacred and modern text and providing a direct connection to their brethren in Eretz Yisrael and the world over. As has been demonstrated repeatedly in studies of second-language proficiency, their mastery of Hebrew also confers upon them academic advantages that include, but are not limited to, greater facility with and insight into their native language.

Building a warm, caring, and devoted community

A pervasive spirit of kindness, togetherness, appreciation, and regard prevails at BPY, making a powerful impression. We aim to treat every child, every parent, every staff member, and every guest, in each and every interaction, as the infinitely valuable person she or he is. Students who grow up and learn in this environment cannot help but become upstanding, collaborative community members and considerate and supportive young people.
